Oil protest ends in France
Protests over fuel prices, which have caused havoc in France over the past six days, have ended. The unions called off their oil blockade after the government offered them a series of tax concessions. A BBC correspondent in France says life is returning to normal across the country and the race is now on to refill many of the petrol stations which ran dry during the strike. She says oil tankers have been moving into the refineries in huge numbers as queues of cars wait bumper-to-bumper at the stations. Similar blockades and demonstrations however, are continuing in Britain. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
