The collapse of Lehman Brothers - and the spread of the crisis through the banking industry - has meant many people have been forced to rethink their careers - even their lives.
David Ambinder is one of the thousands who lost not only a well-paid job but a lot of his money when Lehmans filed for bankruptcy.
He told the BBC how he started again from scratch, with a new career as a handyman.
