Teenage pop star Miley Cyrus has sung her way to the top of the North American box office chart with Hannah Montana: The Movie, early figures show.

The film version of the Disney TV show took $34m (£23.1m) over the weekend knocking Vin Diesel's Fast & Furious - with $28.8 (£19.6m) - off the top.

Cyrus previously topped the chart with a filmed concert of her singing as both herself and alter-ego Hannah Montana.

Animated adventure Monsters vs Aliens was in third with $22.6m (£15.4m).

Hannah Montana: The Movie is the latest instalment in the story of an ordinary teenager who leads a double life as a singing star.

Animated comedy Bolt, in which Cyrus voiced lead character Penny, took $26.2m (£17.8m) on its opening weekend in November and went on to make more than $100m (£68.1m).

Paul Dergarabedian, president of box office analysts Media By Numbers, said: "Her average opening weekend is around $30m (£20.4m).
