Annan report on DR Congo
The United Nations Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, has asked the Security Council to demand the withdrawal of Rwandan and Ugandan troops from the Democratic Republic of Congo. In a report to the Security Council, Mr Annan also said the continuing fighting in the country cast doubt on the planned deployment of UN peacekeepers in the area. The BBC correspondent at the UN says Mr Annan's report, and the expected Council resolution to follow, are clearly aimed at putting pressure on representatives of the various warring factions and nations who are meeting at the UN in New York later this week.
