Palestinians carry out Jerusalem 'census'

Palestinian officials say they have carried out a census of Jerusalem which suggests there are many more Palestinians living there than the Israelis have reported.

The survey -- based on data from Palestinian institutes and ministries as well as field work -- put the number of Palestinians in Jerusalem two years ago at well over three-hundred thousand.

The majority of them live in areas annexed by Israel in 1967.

Israel puts the number of Palestinians in the city at one-hundred and eighty thousand.

Both Israel and the Palestinians claim Jerusalem as their capital. A senior PLO official, Faisal Husseini, said Israeli attempts to Judaise Jerusalem had failed and that the statistics represented Palestinian resistance to being pushed out of the city.
