Max Hastings has edited the London Evening Standard since 1996. He was educated at Charterhouse and University College, Oxford, and served in the parachute regiment of the Territorial Army. A long career in journalism followed.
He was a researcher on the BBC television Great War series in 1963 and then joined the Evening Standard as a reporter. He later became a correspondent and has covered stories all over the world. He edited the newspaper's Londoners' Diary section from 1976-77 and then joined the Daily Express as a columnist. In 1983 he joined the Sunday Times and two years later became editor of the Daily Telegraph, where he stayed until 1995.
Now he is director of Associated Newspapers plc and edits the Evening Standard. He has won many journalism awards including Editor of the Year in 1988. Has written a number of military books and books on Northern Ireland, including The Battle for the Falklands (1983) that won the Yorkshire Post Book of the Year award. He is a trustee of the National Portrait Gallery and was a member of the Press Complaints Commission from 1991-92.
