Bobby Brown has been visited in jail by his wife, Whitney Houston

Singer Bobby Brown has been sentenced to 75 days in prison after violating his probation order for a drink-driving offence.

Brown, who is married to Whitney Houston, was reported by his probation officer after allegedly testing positive for cocaine.

The 33-year-old R&B star admitted refusing to take a second drug test and failing to return from a trip to Beverly Hills on time.

A more serious charge that he failed the first test was dropped by the prosecutor at the court in Fort Lauderdale.

Brown has been in custody since 10 May and will remain in Broward County Jail until 8 July.

He was originally jailed for five days in 1998 and placed on probation for a year after being convicted of drink-driving and causing an accident.

A warrant was issued for his arrest when his probation officer said cocaine had been detected in a urine test.

Brown, who made his name with boy band New Edition before embarking on a solo career, told reporters after the hearing that he wasn't looking forward to returning to jail.

"It's been really tough," he said.

"I just want to continue on with my sobriety and get back home to my family."

Brown will be out just in time to spend his eighth wedding anniversary with Houston on 18 July.

The singing superstar has not attended any of her husband's court appearances, but Lyons said she has been to see him in jail.

Brown's mother, Carol, said afterwards: "He is accepting his disease and doing something about it.

"I'm very confident that he's learned his lesson and I look forward to better days with him and his family."
