Adams faces Euro knockout
![]() Tony Adams suffered a calf injury against Portugal
Tony Adams's Euro 2000 campaign could be over after the Arsenal captain
suffered a calf injury in England's defeat by Portugal on Monday night.
And Steve McManaman is set to miss Saturday's crucial clash against Germany with an injured knee. England coach Kevin Keegan confirmed Adams and McManaman were having scans and treatment but the forecast looked very doubtful. Keegan said: "They have both gone for a scan but the feeling is that Tony will not make the next two games and Steve will not be fit for the match against Germany." Short of fitness Adams, who has had back problems for several seasons, had been nursed through the warm-up for the competition, sitting out training sessions and preferring to follow his own fitness schedule. However he looked well short of full fitness on Monday night before coming off with a calf injury. McManaman limped off after suffering a knee injury while attempting to make a tackle in midfield in the 3-2 defeat. Clubmate Martin Keown, who replaced Adams in Eindhoven, looks certain to start against Germany in Charleroi on Saturday.
Dennis Wise, an obvious candidate to fill the position, picked up an arm injury although Keegan was hopeful it would clear up in time for Saturday. Nick Barmby is another possible replacement, especially after his impressive performances in the friendlies preceding the tournament.
