Phone fault leads to emergency alert
Police had to patrol streets in south east Wales after an exchange fault left up to 48,000 people without telephone services.

People with phone codes 01633 and 01495 were unable to phone 999, so police patrolled the streets for people requiring the emergency services.

A BT spokesman said the service was out of action for around three hours.


Bogus 'doctor' faces trial

A man has appeared at Highbury Corner Magistrates Court accused of assault and posing as a doctor.

Serge Poinen, 50, of Meifod in Powys, is charged with causing actual bodily harm to four people at Grays Inn Medical Centre in Clerkenwell, London.

He is also charged with falsely pretending to be a doctor.

The case was adjourned until 4 October when a date is expected to be set for a committal.


Soldier died 'accidentally'

A Wrexham inquest has recorded a verdict of accidental death on a soldier who was killed in a motor bike crash while serving with the army in Germany.

The inquest heard that 27-year-old Corporal Mark Pepper, from Trevor near Llangollen, went for a ride on his own after an evening out with his brother.

His powerful sports machine hit a lamp-post less than half a mile from his lodgings in the German town of Herford.


E-coli hits prison

Three inmates at Swansea Prison are being treated for e-coli poisoning.

One is receiving treatment in hospital, the other two are in the prison`s medical wing.

Environmental Health officers have tested the prison`s food supply and ruled out the kitchens as a source of the poisoning.

Iechyd Morgannwg health Authority said it was unusual to see three cases of E-Coli together.
