Trains collide in Pakistan

Investigations are continuing into the cause of the crash

Two passenger trains have collided in Pakistan, killing at least two people and injuring 10.

The accident occurred outside Jhampir, 25km (15 miles) north of Karachi, between trains travelling on the same track in the same direction, police said.

The driver and a guard on one of the trains died in the crash which took place at 0535 GMT. Two cars of the trains were demolished.

Pakistan Railways officials and rescue workers have reached the crash site and are searching through the wreckage to see if there are any more casualties.

The injured have been receiving medical attention.

Inquiry

One of the trains was an express passenger train, the Awami Express, travelling from Karachi to Peshawar in the North West Frontier Province, while the other was a local commuter train.

It was not immediately clear why the Shah Latif train hit the Awami Express in the rear.

Officials say the engine of one of the trains may have failed because of which it did not clear the track in time.

An official investigation into the accident has now been launched.
