Mandela in Burundi

The former president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela, is in Burundi in his capacity as chief negotiator in the country's peace process.

Also there is the Ugandan Prime Minister, Apolo Nsimbambi, who will also take part in the discussions.

President Yoweri Museveni had originally been invited, but was unable to attend.

Mr Mandela has had talks with President Pierre Buyoya, and has met political prisoners, some of whom have been detained for seven years.

Mr Mandela is also scheduled to meet representatives of rebel groups, and see the Burundi army command.

Civil war erupted in Burundi in 1993, with several Hutu factions campaigning against the Tutsi-dominated government and army.

Several attempts to end the conflict since then have failed.
