Stay sober on six per cent

The Danes drowning their sorrows - 'probably'
BBC Sport Online's Pete Lansley reports from Bruges on a special initiative by pubs in the city.

The landlords of Bruges have come up with a novel way of attempting to help fans sober up on their way to the Jan Breydel stadium.

In UEFA's official 'Welkom' brochure for Bruges, it says that on matchdays there will be no sale from within the city centre of alcoholic beverages of more than six per cent.

Phew. You'll be fine with a Stella then!

But the stringent and entirely Belgian restrictions continue.

Within what they term the 'dissuasion zone' that 'girdles' the stadium, alcohol content is limited to 3.5 per cent. We're in Hofmeister territory now.

Alcohol is banned within the ground but Sport Online is on the search for a 'really, haven't you all got homes to go to' sector where Kaliber can still be consumed as long as it's accompanied by a packet of salt and vinegar.

Football might be threatening to catch on in Belgium after their heady opening-night triumph over Sweden.

However, there are still restaurants in Bruges where a paper place mat is adorned with a helpful side column entitled 'Euro 2000 - what is that?'
