Clinton speaks directly to Bashar Assad
President Clinton has spoken directly to Bashar Assad to offer his condolences. White House officials gave no further details of the conversation which took place through an interpreter, but Syrian television quoted Mr Assad as saying he told President Clinton that he intended to remain faithful to his father's policy of seeking a comprehensive peace in the Middle East.
