Filippo Inazghi fires home the winner from the spot

Italian matchwinner Filippo Inzaghi admits his side were lucky to have won a controversial late penalty as they edged past Turkey in their Group B opener in Arnhem.

Inzaghi fired home from the spot on 70 minutes after Scottish referee Hugh Dallas harshly ruled that the striker had been fouled by Ogun Temizkenoglu.

"The penalty was a lucky one," admitted Inzaghi afterwards.

He added: "It was a debatable penalty but we reacted very well."

Inzaghi's strike secured victory for the Italians after Buruk Okan had cancelled out Antonio Conte's opening goal and Italian coach Dino Zoff was delighted to have made a winning start.

"The team played very well. We hit the woodwork two or three times and that means we were creating chances," said Zoff.

"We were a bit unlucky at certain moments of the game but the team moved well and there were no mistakes to criticise anyone for."

"Turkey have a good team and they showed it.

"They were very, very good and they were very dangerous," added Zoff.

That was scant consolation for Turkish coach Mustafa Denizlis, who insisted the penalty should never have been given.

"I didn't have a good view but I don't think it was a penalty," Denizlis said.

"But another opinion from our team is that Sergen Yalcin says we should also have had a penalty," he added.

"I am not in a position to say much but I saw two decisions that changed the fate of the match. But I might be wrong."
