Voting over in Montenegrin poll
Voting has ended in municipal elections in the Yugoslav republic of Montenegro which may give an indication of support for independence. The first results are expected early on Monday morning. The governing coalition of the president, Milo Djukanovic, faces a strong challenge from parties loyal to the Yugoslav leader, Slobodan Milosevic. The elections cover the Montenegrin capital, Podgorica, and the coastal town of Herceg Novi, which account for a third of Montenegro's electorate; a high turnout has been reported. The Yugoslav army says it's ready to prevent any moves towards secession. More than a hundred international observers are monitoring the elections. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
