Christian Karembeu is urging England to pick his Real Madrid team-mate Steve McManaman for Monday's opening game with Portugal.
The Middlesbrough-bound midfielder, who played in the World Cup final two years ago, is adamant that McManaman must be selected if England are to do well at Euro 2000. The former Liverpool winger appears a likely choice, but Dennis Wise and Nick Barmby remain in the frame for the left-midfield berth.
"I am sure Macca will be playing on Monday," said Karembeu, who has slipped out the first-choice reckoning for France.
"England are a better team with him, not only because he is good dribbling with the ball and a good offensive player but he is also good in the defence now. "I know in England people think he is no defender but he has learned about that this season with Madrid." Transfer Karembeu, 30, confirmed his move to Middlesbrough has yet to be signed and sealed but says the £3m transfer should go through this month. "It may be next week but maybe it would be better if it happens after Euro 2000 because I need to save my head for this tournament now."
The former Sampdoria and Nantes wide man confirmed: "He ran to spot his girlfriend first and, yes, then to me. That was nice. I was so pleased for him. "I will miss him if I go but at least I go to his country he will be able to tell me all the best places to go."
