In pictures: Mourning Assad
Syrians poured out on to the streets of Damascus to express their sorrow at the death of President Assad. Stunned by the passing of their long-serving leader, people crowded around parliament and the presidential palace.
Grief was unrestrained in the streets of Damascus
And women wept openly for their late leader
Among the mourners, a youth tattooed with portraits of the late president and one of his sons
On the Syrian-Jordanian border, Syrian soldiers make their feelings known
President Assad was also mourned in Lebanon, where Syria was the main power broker.
A Beirut resident draped in black attaches posters of the Syrian president to his car
And in the Golan Heights, Druze men at the village of Magdal Shams wave the Syrian flag in sorrow
