Ancient city uncovered

An international team of archaeologists is planning emergency excavations at an ancient Roman city in southern Turkey which is about to disappear under water.

Over the past few months, Turkish experts have unearthed some of the finest Roman mosaics ever found from the city, at Zeugma.

The lower level of the city will disappear in the next few weeks under the lake created by a hyrdo-electric dam.

But a higher level, which is almost entirely unexcavated, will remain above water until October; it's there that the international team will concentrate its work.

An American charity has offered five million dollars towards the cost.
