Tanzania chooses candidate for Zanzibar poll
The ruling party in Tanzania, Chama Cha Mapinduzi, has chosen the son of Zanzibar's founding president as its candidate for the archipelago in October's presidential elections. At a meeting in the central Tanzanian town of Dodoma, the CCM executive chose Amani Abeid Karume ahead of three other candidates in the contest to succeed President Salmin Amour. After the vote, Mr Karume said his aim was to end the bitter divisions in Zanzibari politics since the last elections in 1995. Mr Karume will face the candidate for the opposition Civic United Front, Seif Sharif Hamad. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
