Police hunt knife and fork robber

Gwent Police are hunting a robber who held up a petrol station by threatening the cashier with a knife and fork.

Cashier Glyn Edwards, 53, was on the night shift at the Texaco garage in Newport when the raider struck.

He said: "He came to the counter with a can of coke in his hand and I thought I was going to pay for it.

"But he suddenly pulled out a knife and fork and told me to hand over the cash.

"I thought he was joking - the way he was holding them it made me feel like a joint of roast beef!"

But Glyn realised the robber was serious when he jabbed the knife at him and ordered him to open the till.

Glyn said: "It was an ordinary household knife and fork but he could have done some serious damage with it.

"He had the knife and I didn't so I went along with his demands.

"I did everything very slowly in the hope that someone would come along."

The robber, aged about 20, escaped with £210 in cash and £50 worth of cigarettes in the raid at BST 0230.

Detective Inspector Andy Watts, of Newport CID, said: "It was a real carve- up.

"The knife and fork were the sort of thing you can find in any kitchen but they could still cause serious injuries."
