Sunday, 11 June, 2000, 17:42 GMT 18:42 UK Martina Navratilova
As well as nine Wimbledon singles crowns (1978-9, 1982-7, 1990), she also won four US (1983-4, 1986-7) three Australian (1981, 1983, 1985), and two French Opens (1982, 1984). Her record as a doubles player is no less impressive, with a record 31 Grand Slam titles between 1973 and 1990, 20 of them in partnership with Pam Shriver. Navratilova also won mixed doubles titles at Wimbledon (1985, 1993), the French Open (1974, 1985), and the US Open (1985, 1987). She was part of Czechoslovakia's Federation Cup-winning team in 1975 and, after becoming a naturalised American citizen in 1981, won the trophy in 1982, 1986 and 1989 with the US team. Having retired in the mid-1990s, Navratilova returned to top-class competition this year in mixed doubles events.
