Wolves savaged by Hull
![]() Hull FC 26 -12 Warrington Wolves
Hull completed a Super League double over Warrington and went three points ahead of them as the pressure for a top five play-off place hots up. The scoring deadlock was broken as early as the fourth minute when Steven McCurrie put Jon Roper over in the corner but the centre failed to turn his try into a six-pointer. Hull, however, reduced the deficit after 15 minutes when McCurrie was caught off-side from a Ben Sammut penalty which hit an upright, and the full-back made no mistake with his second chance. Hull, who had not had a sniff of Warrington's line in the opening 35 minutes, snatched the lead when Tony Grimaldi broke two tackles to feed youngster Richard Horne, who side-stepped a route past four defenders to cross and Sammut added the conversion points. But the Wolves were level as the clock ticked away the seconds to the interval when woeful Hull defending allowed an overlap to be worked on the right which Jerome Guisset gleefully accepted with a clear run home. Roper missed the touchline kick. Sin-binned A great 50-metre run by Lee Briers set up a try for Toa Kohe Love within two minutes of the re-start, but Briers again missed the kick. Tawera Nikau was sin-binned for a tackle on Sammut after his kick-through and although Hull decided to play the power game, they won a penalty for obstruction and the full-back was spot-on with his kick. And Hull were ahead in the 52nd minute as Stanley Gene sped in from a superb David Maiden pass. Hull then made their man power superiority count again within five minutes when Craig Simon skated home from a long and looping Will Robinson pass. Wolves skipper Langer, who had been a thorn in Hull's side with his kicking and copy-book distribution throughout the game, and Nikau, tried all the tricks in their talented repertoires in a late effort to get back into the game. But Hull killed off their hopes of a comeback with a Steve Collins try five minutes from the hooter and Sammut added the two points. Teams:
Hull: Sammut, Daylight, Collins, Simon, Bird, Horne, Robinson,
Broadbent, Jenkins, Felsch, Grimaldi, Maher, Maiden.
Replacements: Wilson, Gene, McDonald, Hick. |
