UN postpones Israel border check

UN inspection teams verifying the Israeli-Lebanese border following Israel's withdrawal from south Lebanon last month have come under attack by protesters who stoned their vehicles.

There were no casualties, but Israeli troops fired warning shots as several Palestinians waving national flags attempted to cut through the fence at Kfar Kila and walk across.

Earlier, the work of UN teams on the Lebanese side was postponed for a day after Lebanon objected to a border line drawn by UN cartographers and demanded technical help to resolve the problem.

International peacekeepers are due to be deployed along the border once the UN certifies the Israeli withdrawal. Correspondents say the latest incidents highlight the difficulties facing the UN in bringing stability to south Lebanon.
