Kosovo minorities "trapped by violence"

On the anniversary of the arrival of NATO-led forces in Kosovo, international condemnation is mounting of the continuing violence against Serbs and other minorities there.

The latest report, by the UN refugee agency UNHCR and the European security organisation OSCE, highlights the damage done to health care, eduction and other services by restrictions on the movements of these minorities.

It says many people are trapped in enclaves or even in their homes.

Serbs and Roma often need armed escorts to venture out, while their children are bused to school.

It adds that many Serbs are deprived of medical services in Kosovo and have to travel outside the province.

The report blames a continuing shortage of UN police and the absence of a functioning and impartial judicial system.
