I'm gay, says singer Sinead

Pop star Sinead O'Connor, whose latest single is No Man's Woman, reveals she is a lesbian in a magazine interview to be published later this month.

O'Connor, 33, admitted she was gay in the cover story of the July-August issue of Curve, the nation's biggest-selling lesbian magazine.

"Throughout most of my life I've gone out with blokes because I haven't necessarily been terribly comfortable about being a lesbian," she said.

The outspoken singer was ordained last year as a priest by the leader of a quasi-Catholic religious sect in Ireland.

Buzz bump starts cinema's year

Buzz Lightyear has helped cinema audiences rocket in early 2000 as Toy Story 2 boosted admissions.

The animated children's film was among the attractions to draw 35.9m people to cinemas so far this year - the second highest first quarter figure since records began.

It is second only to the 1998 high which was set by Titanic - the biggest grossing film.

But Toy Story 2 beat Titantic by scoring the highest opening weekend and week for a nationwide release in the UK.

Other movies to bump up first quarter takings by 17.7% on last year included the five Oscar-winning hit American Beauty, The Talented Mr Ripley and The Beach.

Springsteen song 'inspired by shooting'

Bruce Springsteen has premiered a new song, thought to be inspired by the shooting of an unarmed man by New York police.

"The Boss" performed the track American Skin (41 Shots) during a set with his E Street Band in Atlanta, Georgia.

American Skin opens with the words "41 shots, 41 shots" - the number of bullets fired at Amadou Diallo by four officers who mistook his wallet for a gun last year.

Springsteen does not mention Diallo, who died after being hit by 19 bullets, by name.

Iglesias passes Stern test

Enrique Iglesias has proved he really can sing - after suggestions from US radio DJ Howard Stern that he was tone-deaf.

The so-called "shock jock" had played a supposed recording of Iglesias on his show, suggesting he could not sing.

But Enrique, son of Julio, rose to the challenge and performed live on Stern's morning show to dispel the myth.

"I was trying to find out if he was Milli Vanilli, but he is not - he sings his own records," Stern said afterwards.

O'Donnell defends armed guard decision

US actress and anti-gun campaigner Rosie O'Donnell has defended a request that her son's bodyguard carry a weapon after being accused of hypocrisy by gun groups.

"Whether or not my family is in need of armed guards does not change my position on gun control," she said.

The National Rifle Association said she was a hyprocrite because she has vigorously pushed for tighter gun laws.

She claims her family needs protection after her stance on guns led to threats.

Best hits the milk bottle

Reformed drinker George Best is signing up to star in an ad campaign for milk.

The former soccer star will be portrayed as a cartoon character for the £9m White Stuff campaign and will provide the voice himself, Simpsons-style.

The series of commercials will also feature the cream of the boxing world with Prince Naseem Hamed and Chris Eubank turned into cartoon caricatures.

The campaign, which is narrated by Jonathan Ross and features the slogan "The white stuff, are you made of it?", will run for 18 months from 19 June.
