Lancashire v Hampshire: Lancashire won by an innings and 35 runs
Hampshire's problems continued as they were trounced by an innings and 35 runs against a competent Lancashire side. Resuming on 45-3, the visitors slumped to 139 all out shortly after lunch, failing to make the home side bat again. Andy Flintoff captured another four wickets, making seven in total for the match at a cost of just 30 runs, to complement his innings of 73. Australian all-rounder Joe Scuderi, who qualifies to play via his Italian passport, took two wickets.
Durham v Yorkshire: Durham 105 & 94-5 - Yorkshire 294 Yorkshire are within sight of top spot after Darren Gough took three wickets to leave Durham struggling to avoid defeat. Facing a first-innings deficit of 105 after Yorkshire made 294, Durham soon slipped to 35-4 before reaching the close of play on 94-5 on day two at the Riverside. Michael Vaughan made 94 for Yorkshire before becoming Ian Hunter's first championship victim. Hunter also took the last three wickets off five balls to finish with fine figures of 4-73.
Somerset v Kent: Kent 261 & 223 - Somerset 295 & 50-3 England seamer Andy Caddick underlined his value to the Somerset attack with match figures of 10-97. Caddick looked a cut above the rest of the pacemen as he added four wickets to his tally in the second innings at the end of day three at Bath. Matthew Fleming held up Somerset with 23, before the last four wickets subsided in a mere 25 balls. Somerset were thus faced with 190 to win, and lost Marcus Trescothick to the first ball of the innings. Skipper Jamie Cox is unbeaten and Somerset ended the day on 50-3.
Sussex v Middlesex: Middlesex 370 - Sussex 284-9 Richard Johnson claimed 6-66, his best performance for two years, as Middlesex pegged Sussex back on day two. This was Johnson's second successive five-wicket haul following on from his figures of 9-149 in the championship match with Gloucestershire. Sussex were indebted to Umer Rashid (44) for battling through the final session to reach the close on 284-9, 86 behind Middlesex's total of 370. Aussie Test ace Michael Beven showed his class with a superb 72 for Sussex.
Derbyshire v Surrey: Surrey 118 & 218 - Derby 191 & 119-3 Derbyshire will discover on Friday if they are to be disciplined over the state of the pitch that has seen an incredible 33 wickets fall in two days. After two dramatic collapses on the first day, the ECB's pitches liaison officers were at the County Ground today to asses the state of the wicket. Alec Stewart and Ali Brown showed it was possible to bat, sharing 80 in 17 overs for the fourth-wicket. Derby reached 119-3, 47 runs from their first championship win of the season.
Nottinghamshire v Worcestershire: Worcs 402 - Notts 300-9 A magnificent unbroken last-wicket stand of 139 by Usman Afzaal and Andrew Harris saved the follow-on for Notts. The final pairing came together with Notts deep in trouble at 161-9 and well short of the 253 follow-on target. But left-hander Afzaal, who before Thursday was averaging just over nine from seven innings this season, smashed a career-best 146 not out. The partnership is the highest ever for the 10th wicket for Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge.
Gloucestershire v Essex: Essex won by 109 runs Essex snatched an unlikely victory after Gloucestershire were bowled out for 85 in a little over two hours. Earlier, Nasser Hussain's worrying form continued as he was one of six Jon Lewis wickets, caught behind for 0. Gloucester gave themselves concern ahead of Saturday's B&H final as five wickets fell for 39 on the dry surface, which was prone to variable bounce. But that was no excuse for the collapse as Danny Law came on with a 4.4-over burst which gave him figures of 4-15. |
