Violent clashes in Jammu and Kashmir

Clashes between Indian security forces and suspected militants in the Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir state have left at least seventeen people dead, including five Indian security personnel.

Three Indian paramilitary soldiers and a suspected Pakistani militant were killed in an exchange of fire at Arnas, in Udhampur district.

In a separate incident, the Indian police said some thirty civilians were injured when militants threw a grenade at an Indian paramilitary force vehicle at a busy market in the town of Sopore.

Several militants and civilians died in other clashes across the state.
