West Indies secured a 20-run victory over Glamorgan, after a late fightback at Sophia Gardens.

As the score suggests it was a low-scoring game and was not easy to bat on

Despite a valiant stand from Robert Croft and Keith Newell, the tourists hit back with three quick wickets, to scrape a much-needed win ahead of their first Test against England at Edgbaston.

After the game, Glamorgan captain Steve James admitted his side were disappointed not to have built on a promising start.

"We always knew it was going to be hard on this wicket," he said.

"As the score suggests it was a low-scoring game and was not easy to bat on.

West Indies took a number of late wickets to wrap up the match
"Overall it was a very creditable performance but we're now looking forward to more luck and a better result at the Benson and Hedges Cup final on Saturday."

Glamorgan started well with both skipper James and Matthew Elliott notching up 49 inside the first 15 overs.

But when James departed it prompted the Welsh county's demise.

Nixon McLean ended the day as West Indies' hero, taking 5-30.

Both teams had a similar experience with the bat

Windies' skipper Jimmy Adams
His scalps included three tail-enders and former Australian test opener Elliott, who mis-timed a catch to captain Jimmy Adams at mid on in the same over James was run out.

Adams later saluted his side's performance.

"It was very close," he said. "But we're getting used to that.

"Both teams had a similar experience with the bat, but all credit to my players for hanging in there."
