Peace marches in India's north east

Thousands of people across northeastern India have taken part in peace marches to protest at decades of violence in the region by separatist and ethnic groups.

Those taking part in the demonstrations called upon the separatist rebel groups to give up violence and to return to a normal way of life.

The peace marches were organised by the state governments of the seven northeastern states.

Thousands of people have died in the various separatist conflicts in the region during the past four decades.
