![]() Bailey: just failed to pull off a fantastic win
With many Wimbledon memories from not only her days as a presenter but also as a player, Sue Barker talks to the BBC Sport Online team.
Her she recalls Chris Bailey's five-set battle with big-serving Goran Ivanisevic in 1993, which almost ended with a famous British win.
When Chris Bailey was at match point against Goran Ivanisevic, we all rushed to Centre Court to watch a gutsy British victory over a world-class player. Ivanisevic served match point down and got a very lucky net cord on his second serve. He then bravely served an ace. I remember Chris' wry smile. He knew then that it was not going to be his day. Chris, now a BBC commentator, eventually lost 9-7 to Ivanisevic in the deciding set. The match was a real rollercoaster. Chris won the first set 7-5 but then lost the second on a tie-break. Undaunted by the Croatian's power, he regained the lead by taking the third on another tie-break. But Ivanisevic was not beaten, winning the fourth 6-4 before holding his nerve for a thrilling victory. It was tough on Chris, but he fought long and hard.
