UN Congo peace appeal

Latest reports from the Democratic Republic of Congo say fighting in the north-eastern city of Kisangani between Rwandan and Ugandan forces has gone into a fourth day.

A United Nations military official in the city told the BBC French service that clashes had continued all night.

He said townspeople were unable to leave to seek safety.

The fighting broke out again on Monday as the two armies were apparently preparing to withdraw from the city and leave it to UN control.

Yesterday, the UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan, demanded that they observe a cease-fire and withdraw as promised.

At least fifty civilians have been killed and a-hundred injured. The UN is planing to deploy a five-thousand-strong peacekeeping force in the country.
