Injured boy flown to hospital
A teenager has been suspended from a north Wales school, following an incident in which another pupil was flown to hospital with a head injury.

Fourteen-year-old Barry Jones - a pupil at Bodedern Secondary School on Anglesey - is recovering after being treated by doctors.

He came home last Thursday complaining of a headache.

Doctors at Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor decided he needed specialist treatment and a helicopter from RAF Valley flew him to the neurological unit of Walton Hospital in Liverpool.

The school has confirmed that another pupil has been suspended while an investigation is carried out by education officials.

Morgan announces botanic garden boost

Assembly First Secretary Rhodri Morgan has announced additional funding of £500,000 to boost the development of the National Botanic Garden of Wales, near Carmarthen.

He said this would allow work on the next phases of the project to be accelerated, and included facilities such as an audio visual centre.

Mr Morgan said this additional support would be provided by the Wales Tourist Board, which was already providing £400,000.

He made the announcement on a visit to the garden to mark the opening of Principality House, a lifelong learning centre.

Student jailed over drug plan

An undergraduate at Lampeter College has been jailed for arranging for a friend touring India to post back consignments of cannabis resin stuffed into hollowed out books.

Keith Nesbitt, 42, was sent two consignments of resin but they were both intercepted by the Post Office.

Nesbitt of Bank Farm, Cribyn near Lampeter, admitted possessing resin and conspiring to import a controlled drug.

He was jailed for four months by Judge Michael Burr at Swansea crown court.

Hotel guests spot 'wild cat'

Sightings of a wild cat have been reported by people living in west Wales.

Several sightings have been made over the last few days of a large animal, thought to be a wild cat of some form, in the St David's area of Pembrokeshire.

Several residents from the Walpole Court Hotel area have reported seeing a creature early in the morning.

Over the last few months, there have been reports of other unusual wild animals, thought to be pumas or, in one case, a lion in the Letterston and Newport areas of Pembrokeshire.

Students learn diving lesson

A university diving club is holding an investigation after being criticised by coastguards for sparking a major rescue operation.

The incident began just before BST 1700 on Saturday off the coast of Anglesey at Amlwch when a local diving boat picked up two divers adrift in the sea.

Coastguards were initially told all the divers were accounted for - but later discovered two others from the Swansea University Sub-Aqua Club were missing.

A major rescue operation involving a RAF rescue helicopter, lifeboat and coastguard shore teams was launched and the pair were found safe.

Coastguards say the situation was hampered because the university dive boat had apparently turned off a handheld VHF radio.

Passenger killed in crash

Gwent Police are questioning a man after the death of a 20-year-old man in a road accident in Caerphilly.

The suspect, also 20, from Abertridwr, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving while under the influence of alcohol.

The deceased, who died after the incident on Pontygwindy Road, has not yet been named.

Crash man in fight for life

A man is fighting for his life after a head-on crash between a car and a tanker in west Wales.

Fire crews cut him free from the wreckage, following the accident in Freeman's Way, Haverfordwest, around midnight on Saturday night.

He is now being treated at Morriston Hospital in Swansea.

Two other people in the car escaped serious injury.

Explosion destroys power boat

A power boat was wrecked off a popular holiday beach in the early hours after cooking gas tanks exploded during a fire.

Two local men had managed to get ashore by dinghy after a fire began in the electrical system of the 35ft Lady Beryl off Llanddwyn Island on the west coast of Anglesey.

While she was anchored offshore in the early hours the gas tanks exploded.

The boat was burned down to the water level and sank with the bow twisted and jutting into the air.

Ferry rescues struggling yacht

A ferry from Ireland came to the aid of a 35ft Bermudan sloop with three people aboard which was caught in a vicious squall.

It happened off the North Stack cliffs near Holyhead in Anglesey. The sloop asked for assistance when buffeted by wind and rain.

Holyhead lifeboat was already at sea towing in a yacht which had broken down and ripped her sails more than 13 miles out.

Luckily the ferry Stena Explorer then appeared and acted as a wind-break to enable the sloop, Silver Sage, to make harbour at Holyhead.
