Keegan backs Shearer and Seaman
![]() Euro 2000 is Shearer's last chance to silence his critics
England manager Kevin Keegan shrugged off recent criticism of his captain Alan Shearer and goalkeeper David Seaman in the last press conference before England leave for Euro 2000, restating his support for both players.
Asked about a recent Internet poll that found a 72 per cent majority against including Shearer in the starting XI, Keegan said: "I don't take too much notice of these polls. "I have always said if Alan Shearer is fit, he will play."
When questioned about comments from the Portuguese camp suggesting Seaman and his defence were a weak link, Keegan said he was treating the remarks as kidology on Portugal's part and was not taking them too seriously.
"We have done the same and they have weaknesses as well as strengths. "Those words can be used to build a spirit and togetherness but I wouldn't say it will motivate us. "I would hope they cannot be motivated any more than they already are. This is a major tournament and that should be enough." Keegan also confirmed that Shearer and full-back Gary Neville missed Wednesday's practice, although neither have serious injuries and both would be available for selection for Monday's opening clash against Portugal. On the subject of Shearer, Keegan said he did not know, or care, why his captain continued to be the target of criticism. "People have a right to their opinions, but they're just not on the same wavelength as me," he said.
