Celebrities joined green activists in the US who targeted one of the world's most profitable retail groups through a series of high profile demonstrations. They aim to shame the Gap clothing company which denies harming the environment and using sweat shop labour. David Willis reported from Los Angeles.

The enemy within



Slobodan Milosevic's government is blamed for Serbia's latest political assassination. This time the victim was the national security adviser of Montenegro, gunned down it is believed because of his country's moves towards independence from Serbia. It is the latest in a series of killings. John Simpson reported from Belgrade.

Urban sandstorms



The Chinese capital, Beijing, has experienced a series of exceptionally heavy sandstorms. The Chinese government blames them on a process of desertification that is taking place across north China. As Adam Brookes reported from there, the country's leaders are looking at drastic combative measures.

Microsoft goes to war



A US federal judge ordered that Microsoft be broken up into two parts while rebuking the global software maker for stifling computer-age competition. Microsoft's founder Bill Gates rejected the verdict and promised to fight on by appealing against the decision. Evan Davies reported.

The cry of the Penguin



Scientists have thrown new light on one of the mysteries of the natural world. They have long been puzzled by the way penguins are able to identify the call of their mates and offspring in teeming and noisy colonies. Now a team at Paris University has come up with the answer, as Christine McGourty reported.

US questions death penalty



The US state of Texas is under pressure to drop its use of the death penalty. A national movement against executions has been fuelled by a case in Illinois, where all executions were suspended after 13 innocent men were released from death row. Stephen Sackur reported from Texas.
