SAfrica cricket inquiry goes on
Two more former South African international cricketers are due to testify later today as the inquiry into allegations of corruption in the national game enters its second day. Daryl Cullinan and Derek Crookes are due to give evidence to the King Commission, which is investigating charges that the South African team was paid to lose matches. On the opening day of hearings, the former Test player, Pat Symcox, said that the captain, Hansie Cronje, had put a proposal to the whole team in 1996 that they should deliberately lose a match against India. Mr Symcox said the offer was turned down, but only after being seriously considered. The inquiry was set up when Hansie Cronje resigned in disgrace after he admitted accepting money to predict the outcome of Test matches. He denies Indian police allegations that he was involved in match-fixing while on tour. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
