Father admits killing his baby
![]() Bradley George was eight weeks old when he was killed
A father is facing a life sentence after admitting murdering his eight-week-old baby son.
Christopher Rees, 23, killed baby Bradley George in a violent attack at his home in Merthyr Tydfil last November. He told police he could not remember what happened. Police and emergency services discovered the baby after being called to a disturbance at the house on the Gurnos Estate.
The baby was taken to the nearby Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr but died from multiple injuries. The full details of exactly what went on in the house that night have not yet been revealed. But prosecuting Roger Thomas QC told Cardiff Crown Court that considerable violence was used in the course of which the baby was killed. The baby's mother, Samantha George, 20, arrived at the court with relatives and friends and sat in the public gallery throughout the hearing which lasted just a few minutes.
John Charles Rees QC, defending, said Rees, unemployed, from Dowlais in Merthyr, had told police and a pschiatrist that he could not remember what happened. The hearing was adjourned for 10 days. Speaking after the hearing Bradley's grandmother Marilyn Gullis said she was still coming to terms with the loss. "I cannot understand how someone can murder their own child," she said. "How can someone harm a baby that cannot defend himself?" She said knowing Rees would get life helped "a bit" adding: "I still want him to suffer, I feel evil against him."
Local councillor Alan Davies said although the Gurnos Estate, had a troubled history - people were still shocked over the murder. "To knock a baby round, kill a baby is the most deplorable situation you can ever imagine," he said. "The mother, I don't think, will ever come to terms with the situation, neither will the community." Although the Gurnos gets a bad publicity the community itself is a very close-knit community and looks after each other."
