Barnes backs England

John Barnes believes England are capable of beating anyone they face at Euro 2000.
The former England and Liverpool winger is backing Kevin Keegan's team to at least reach the knock-out stages of the tournament. He said: "I think England will definitely progress through their group stage - from there it will depend on who they draw. "On their day they are capable of beating anyone, but I would worry if they came up against a strong French side." Back four Barnes is urging Keegan to play a flat back four and steer away from the wing-back system Glenn Hoddle used in France 98. "The players appear happier in a 4-4-2 formation - week in and week out in the Premiership they use this system. "Why change it because we supposedly have a shortage of left-sided players?
"Instead McManaman, Barmby and Wise can give England a different option because each player can cut in on their right foot and score goals." Support Barnes also gave his support to England captain Alan Shearer over his controversial challenge on Malta defender Darren Debono, whose nose was broken in the collision. He said: "I have known Alan for a very long time, and he has never deliberately injured a fellow player. "He is a physical player, who at times jumps with his arms. "People should get off his back and put their support behind him - after all he is the national captain."
