Another Romanian bank in difficulties

The government in Romania has said it will adopt tighter banking controls within two weeks, after yet another bank announced it was in financial difficulties.

The Romanian People's Bank said it was suspending pay-outs for six months in order to recover from a spate of withdrawals.

It's the third Romanian bank in three weeks to announce financial problems, and it follows the collapse of six other banks in the country.

A police investigation is under way into what the Prime Minister, Mugur Isarescu, has called a carefully orchestrated mafia-style campaign to cause panic.

People afraid they've lost their savings have been demonstrating in a number of towns.
