Violence flares in Kosovo town

A day of violence in one of the few remaining Serb enclaves in Kosovo has left eight people wounded.

The trouble started when grenades were thrown from a passing car into an outdoor market where Serbs were shopping in the town of Gracanica.

The Serbs responded by stopping Albanian cars to look for the attackers; a number of vehicles were set on fire and two Albanians were reportedly injured.

The British military commander responsible for the area Brigadier Richard Shirref met a hostile response from local Serbs when he went to investigate the violence, and his bodyguards opened fire on the crowd, wounding one person. Serb leaders say they have repeatedly warned international peacekeepers in Kosvo that the market in Gracanica is vulnerable to attack.
