One dead in Swiss train crash

One man has been killed and three others injured in a train crash near the Swiss city of Lucerne.

The accident happened when a passenger train collided with a stationary freight train at Huswil station.

The driver of the freight train was killed by the oncoming passenger service

The other train driver and two passengers were also injured.

Police say they believe one of the points may have been wrongly switched, but they say they do not know the exact reason for the crash.

French derailment

Meanwhile, the French rail company (SNCF) has concluded that a fault in the transmission caused the derailment of a Eurostar train travelling from Paris to London on Monday.

The company says a component which links the gearbox to the wheels was torn apart as the train was travelling at about 250 kph.

The train came off the rails near the town of Arras, but managed to stay upright leaving passengers unhurt.

Eurostar has temporarily withdrawn all 30 of its engines for safety checks.
