The 33-year-old's body was found in an upstairs bedroom of his home at Audley Avenue in Lisburn on Friday, by his wife Lesley and a neighbour.

He had suffered severe head injuries and it is understood he had been beaten with a blunt weapon, possibly a hockey stick.

Mrs Gault is thought to have returned home about 1100 BST on the day of the murder, after bringing their three children to school.

She found that the glass in the back door of the house had been broken and thought it was being burgled.

She went to a neighbour for help and when they returned to the house, the neighbour went upstairs and found the victim.

No motive for the murder has yet been established.

On Tuesday morning detectives set up a checkpoint in Lisburn as part of the investigation into Mr Gault's murder.

They questioned motorists in the area and handed out posters in the hope of jogging peoples' memories..
