Fergie: Striker not needed
![]() Sheringham deal means no more strikers wanted
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has insisted he will not be buying another striker in the summer.
Ferguson has been linked with multi-million moves for Liverpool's Robbie Fowler, Barcelona's Patrick Kluivert and David Trezeguet of Monaco, following the collapse of Ruud van Nistelrooy's record £18.5million transfer from PSV Eindhoven to United. Ferguson said he persuaded Teddy Sheringham to stay at Old Trafford on the proviso he would not buy any more forwards. And he does not intend going back on his word after Sheringham signed a one-year deal last week.
He is happy to stick with his strike quartet of Sheringham, Andy Cole, Dwight
Yorke and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who between them scored 66 goals last season.
Sir Alex said: "I could detect Teddy wanted to stay when I had a chat with him and I just wanted to assure him I wouldn't be buying another striker. "I think that did it for us. Of course people are sceptical about us saying we won't buy a forward, but I'm not buying another striker. We have the four and I'm very pleased with them." Kluivert says he wants to stay at Barcelona despite the resignation of coach Louis van Gaal at the weekend and intense media rumours he was heading to Old Trafford. Instead of another striker Ferguson is believed to be in the market for a goalkeeper and a centre-half. |
