Spanish squad unveiled
![]() Spain have included young Real star Iker Casillas
Spain coach Jose Antonio Camacho has named his final 22-man squad for Euro 2000.
Camacho waited until after the Champions League final between Real Madrid and Valencia on Wednesday and Saturday's Spanish Cup final between Atletico Madrid and Espanyol before completing his selection. As a result, the likes of Raul, Fernando Hierro and Gaizika Mendieta are all in the final 22 as expected. But there are surprise call-ups for uncapped midfielder Gerard Lopez from Valencia and young Real keeper Iker Casillas, another yet to appear at full international level. Camacho explained: "Gerard is a good goalscorer and he can play as well up front or in a withdrawn role and he is in good form so we must take advantage of that. "Of the 22 anyone can play. When I pick a player I don't think he can go into the team or not because of his age. If he is good enough for the squad, he is good enough for the team." Notable omissions include Real striker Fernando Morientes, Racing's Salva Ballesta - the top scorer in the Spanish first division this season with 27 goals - and Atletico Bilbao's vastly experienced midfielder Julen Guerrero. Chelsea's Albert Ferrer is also missing, injury in the late part of the season scuppering his bid to push for a place in the 22.
Barcelona defender Sergi Barjuan is also in despite injury problems this season and spending much of his time on the bench after failing to catch the eye former coach Louis van Gaal. Spain have two friendlies scheduled before the start of the Euro 2000 finals. They take on Sweden in Gothenburg on 3 June and are then away to Luxembourg on 7 June.
Spain squad: Goalkeepers: Santiago Canizares (Valencia), Jose Francisco Molina (Atletico Madrid), Iker Casillas (Real Madrid). Defenders: Agustin Aranzabal (Real Sociedad), Sergi Barjuan (Barcelona), Paco Jemez (Real Zaragoza), Juan Velasco (Celta Vigo), Abelardo Fernandez (Barcelona), Michel Salgado (Real Madrid), Ivan Helguera (Real Madrid), Fernando Hierro (Real Madrid). Midfielders: Pep Guardiola (Barcelona), Vicente Engonga (Real Mallorca), Fran Gonzalez (Deportivo Coruna), Gaizka Mendieta (Valencia), Juan Carlos Valeron (Atletico Madrid), Gerard Lopez (Valencia). Forwards: Joseba Etxeberria (Athletic Bilbao), Pedro Munitis (Racing Santander), Ismael Urzaiz (Athletic Bilbao), Alfonso Perez (Real Betis), Raul Gonzalez (Real Madrid).
