Concern over Paraguay state of emergency

There's growing concern in Paraguay over the government's decision to declare a state of emergency after last week's failed coup.

Trade unions leaders, farmers and journalists have accused the authorities of abusing the extraordinary powers, which are due to last thirty days, to serve their own interests rather than to investigate the rebellion.

More than one hundred people, including serving and retired soldiers, police officers and civilians have been arrested. One reporter accused of involvement in the coup attempt has taken refuge in a newspaper office. The government has accused those behind the attempted uprising of supporting the fugitive former army chief, General Lino Oviedo.

He's wanted in connection with the assassination of the vice-president a year ago.
