ECB reveals World Cup record
Australia celebrate after the 1999 World Cup final
Australia win last year's World Cup final
The England and Wales Cricket Board has revealed that last summer's World Cup made a record profit of £30m.

The Board's annual report also reveals that the six-week tournament, which was won by Australia, was seen by a cumulative television audience of 2.3 billion spread over 129 countries.

The ECB is set to receive £13.7m from the overall surplus which was achieved despite England's early exit and the fact that only four sponsors were found for the event, half the hoped for number.

"The frustration and disappointment of England's premature departure from ther Cricket World Cup was in dreamatic contrast to the huge satisfaction we all shared at the success of the event," said ECB chairman Lord MacLaurin.

"Whilst it was disappointing that the World Cup did not attract the full quota of commercial partners originally projected, the event was still the most profitable so far."

The ECB claims that the decision to play matches at smaller county grounds like Canterbury and Bristol was worthwhile, despite complaints from fans that they were unable to obtain tickets.

The reports claims interest in the game among schoolchildren has increased, with 10 per cent more secondary schools now including the sport in their timetables.

"It's been a very busy, yet rewarding year. We're delighted at these reults as it demonstrates that we're making real progress in developing the game in this country," Lord MacLaurin added.
