New mayor for Quito

Voters in Ecuador have held elections to choose regional authorities as well as mayors.

Exit polls indicate that a former army commander, Paco Moncayo, has won the vote to become mayor of the capital, Quito, while in the Pacific port of Guayaquil, the former presidential candidate, Jaime Nebot, is thought to have won.

The Supreme Electoral Tribunal said that voting went ahead as planned and there were no significant problems despite fears that heavy rain in many parts of the country would disrupt the elections. Correspondents say the opposition parties are likely to have done well because voters are keen to punish the government's for what they believe is it's poor economic record.
