Sussex slump to County defeat
![]() Vikram Solanki's batting helped Worcs to victory
Sussex v Worcestershire County Championship Division Two: Sussex 258 and 148, Worcestershire 311-8 dec and 96-3.
Result: Worcestershire win by seven wickets Elliott Wilson and Vikram Solanki put on a match-winning stand of 80 as Worcestershire sealed a seven-wicket victory over struggling Sussex. The visitors, chasing a target of 96 off 26 overs, got home with 11 balls remaining to leave Sussex rooted to the bottom of Division Two. Sussex, resuming with a lead of only 61 on 114-7, were bowled out for 148 with Glenn McGrath finishing with 4-30. Worcestershire were left 96 to win off 34 overs but eight were lost to rain. National League Division One
Leicestershire v Kent Trevor Ward smashed a 49-ball half-century to steer Leicestershire to their first National League win of the season against his old county Kent. Put into bat, Kent totalled 141-9 off their 45 overs with Matthew Walker top-scoring with 48. On a slow-going pitch, Kent never recovered after losing six wickets for 21 runs in a six-over spell. Chasing 142 for victory, the home side slipped to 23-4 before recovering to win with three wickets to spare.
Somerset v Northamptonshire Keith Parsons produced another match-winning half-century as Somerset beat Northants at Taunton. The visitors made an impressive 240 after winning the toss, thanks mainly to Graeme Swan's 57. Somerset hit the target with 17 balls to spare and it was Parsons' unbroken seventh-wicket stand of 85 with Ian Blackwell which proved crucial. Somerset now have maximum points from their first two league games after a win over Gloucestershire in round one.
Yorkshire v Gloucestershire Off-spinner James Middlebrook took 3-16 in five overs to steer Yorkshire to a 35-run win over Gloucestershire. Yorkshire reached 160-3 thanks to a brisk opening stand of 77 between David Byas and Gary Fellows. After the early loss of Rob Cunliffe, Gloucestershire were restored by Tim Hancock and Matt Windows, who added 43 in the next 11 overs. But they were bowled out for 129 with 16 balls remaining. Division Two
Durham v Glamorgan Glamorgan recorded their first win in the National League when they beat Durham by 15 runs. The rain-affected match saw Durham finish on 91-3 with Simon Katich on 47 not out. Glamorgan's revised target was 105 in 28 overs and they had reached 70-2 in 18 overs when rain ended play. The light was poor at the start of Durham's innings and Nicky Peng lasted only two balls.
Nottinghamshire v Derbyshire Darren Bicknell and John Morris each hit half-centuries to make it three wins out of three for the Nottinghamshire Outlaws. The winning blow was struck by yet another new winter signing, Giles Haywood, as Notts passed the total of 187 with 22 balls to spare. The final result had looked highly unlikely when Derbyshire's two Australian openers Matthew Cassar and Michael di Venuto set off at a pace. Between them they smashed seven fours in the first three overs.
Warwickshire v Hampshire Dougie Brown continued a productive spell with the bat by sweeping Warwickshire to their third successive National League win over Hampshire. Brown, who scored a double century against Sussex earlier this month, hammered an unbeaten 45 off 61 balls to clinch a five-wicket victory. Hampshire mustered only 154 but this looked a winning score when Warwickshire lurched to 71-5. But the match was re-shaped as soon as Brown broke Shane Warne's grip.
Surrey v Middlesex Both teams awarded two points.
