"Nigeria clashes kill ninety" says report
Reports from Nigeria say at least ninety people have been killed in renewed ethnic clashes in the south-east of the country. A report in the newspaper, This Day, says the violence flared in the neighbouring states of Akwa Ibom and Cross River after a disagreement over land ownership. According to the report, the state government of Akwa Ibom has accused Cross River of sponsoring unrest in the area. Akwa Ibom was part of Cross River state prior to 1987. There has been no official confirmation of the death toll. The reported clashes are the latest in a series of ethnic conflicts which have flared since Nigeria ended fifteen years of military rule in 1999. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
