Israeli child injured in Jericho violence

There's been more violence in the Palestinian territories in the West Bank.

The Israeli army said a two year-old Israeli girl was seriously injured when the car she was travelling in was attacked by fire bombs in the town of Jericho. The girl's mother and her aunt were also said to have been injured. Earlier, the Israeli Prime Minister, Ehud Barak, postponed a planned trip to Washington because of the continuing violent clashes between protestors and Israeli troops in Palestinian territories, and clashes in southern Lebanon.

Mr Barak has demanded that the Palestinian leadership act to stop the violence in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. More than sixty Palestinians have been injured in a week of protests over the detention of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.

Five Palestinians have died in the past week.

In Washington, a White House spokesman, P J Crowley, said President Clinton was concerned about the continuing violence and understood why Mr Barak felt it necessary to postpone his trip.
