Serbia continues moves against opposition

The Serbian authorities have continued to detain members of the student protest organisation, Otpor, with more than thirty activist arrested on Saturday.

The officials have linked the organisation with the killing last week of the head of the northern province of Vojvodina, and several hundred of its members have since been detained.

Otpor has denied the allegations, and a BBC correspondent says the motive of the killing appears to have been personal.

Our correspondent says the moves have coincided with warnings that the authorities will not allow demonstrations to interrupt the smooth running of state -- a move the opposition says is aimed keeping down the numbers at its rallies. New demonstrations against the recent closure of a leading television and radio station were, however, staged on Saturday, although the numbers were down from the previous days.
